Thirty-five-year-old Australian drive Will Power took the checquered flag in the second of two races known as the Dual in Detroit. The Yanks were using the fact that there were two races in order to make a play on the word “dual” in place of the word “duel.” The country that forever confused the world’s schoolchildren by coining the word “lite” to describe tasteless, watery beer seems to have an unending supply of linguists bent on destroying the King’s English.
At any rate, the Queenslander from Toowoomba won an IndyCar race where the typically unknown ability of Indy cars to turn right was on display.
Power started the race in sixth position and took advantage of a yellow flag on the 50th of 70 laps when he used an excellent pit stop courtesy of Team Penske to seize the lead and hold off teammate Simon Pagenaud for the win.
In the first race of the duel, er, dual on Saturday, Power was walking at the end when a pit stop mistake akin to those to which Team Red Bull is subjecting Daniel Ricciardo in the F1 ranks meant that Power could not even drive to the Saturday race’s conclusion.
