Mason Cox backed his debut with a two-goal outing for the Collingwood Magpies against the West Coast Eagles, but it was simply not enough to change the outcome as the Eagles turned their home ground of Subiaco Oval into the site of a 62-point win, even though the Magpies looked good in the second and third quarters.
The Eagles have won when playing at Subiaco by an average of 58 points this season, and while some observers claim that the Eagles are capable only of beating lower-ranked teams, they maintained and improved on their average victory margin.
When Jarryd Blair kicked a goal at time-on of the third term, it got the Pies to within 10 points, but they were never able to close the gap any further as West Coast used its superior firepower in the fourth term to kick nine of the last 10 goals of the match.
Cox is apparently in for more than a bit of schooling as he tries to transitions from playing college basketball in the U.S. to playing footy in Australia. Early in the game, he was unceremoniously pushed out of a boundary throw-in by West Coast’s Nick Naitanui, who proceeded to take the ball out of the ruck and snap a goal off his left foot.
