When we are wrong, we are the first to admit it, actually, the only ones to admit it, as others are not making an admission, but an observation when they point out our errors, so we now take responsibility for our pre-tournament prediction that Novak Djokovic was a lock to win the 2016 U.S. Open.
It seems that Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka did not read our prediction, or if he did, he disregarded it completely and beat Djokovic 6 – 7 (1 – 7), 6 – 4, 7 – 5, 6 – 3 in yesterday’s U.S. Open final.
Wawrinka admitted to a case of the jitters prior to the match, even though he has beaten Djokovic on the big stage before, including the final of last year’s French Open. He also beat Rafael Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open.
Wawrinka’s road to tennis glory has been an arduous one. In fourteen years as a professional, he has made it to a Grand Slam final just three times, although once he did, he was successful on all three occasions.
He needs only to win Wimbledon to achieve a career Grand Slam. It took him four years at the professional level to win his first ATP tournament, where he proved he could beat Djokovic, even though it required Djokovic to retire due to fatigue.
We say congratulations to Wawrinka and wish him well, mainly because he hits his backhand with one handed, like a real man.
