We personally can think of about 100 million reasons why Conor McGregor will shed few tears over losing his UFC lightweight and featherweight belts, but some McGregor fans might not stick around to hear the first 10, let alone all 100 million.
Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight to determine a new champion in the lightweight division.
McGregor has been busy since winning the title 14 months ago, too busy to be bothered with MMA and Dana White, not exactly renowned for a saint’s patience, said McGreogr’s offer to return in August was not adequate.
Ferguson holds the interim belt, but the latest information has a title fight between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov on the slate for April 7 in New York.
McGregor might soon be promoting the fact that he is the first champion in history to be stripped of two belts.
Dana White had a say of his own. “I don’t think Conor wants to fight until August, but if he waits until August or September, that’s around two years since the belt has been defended, and that can’t happen,” White said. “Not only to the sport, but to the other fighters. This is game of time. Time is your enemy in this sport, or any other sport.”
In further remarks published by The Sun, White built his case, saying, “When you’re a professional athlete, time is your enemy, and we can’t let this thing go on forever and not give other guys the opportunity.
“Tony Ferguson has been around for a long time and has earned his dues, Khabib has earned his dues, and the list goes on and on.”
Is it possible that McGregor thought he had gotten bigger than MMA, or is his financial projection that he will burn through the estimated $US100 million he received for his participation in his fight with Floyd Mayweather?
White and the UFC are not saying neither is McGregor.
Nurmagomedov v Ferguson could have happened in the early part of March 2018, but the Russian was sent to hospital following a crash brought on by an attempt to cut his weight.
