Port Adelaide supporters received an early Christmas present when they learned that Travis Boak would be with the club through the end of the 2019 season thanks to a recently signed contract extension. Three seasons is an eternity in the AFL and feels more like 21 in dog seasons.

Geelong had been courting Boak back in 2012, structuring the appeal based on it being his hometown club, but that homey decided not to play that.

The 27-year-old captain of the Power will in all probability finish his career with the club. He will be 31 when the deal expires. If the club can build on last season’s disappointing outcome, considering that they were a couple of heartbeats and four points shy of a Grand Final appearance in 2014, supporters will consider Boak’s new deal money well spent.

If Boak can stay on the ground next year, he will hit the 200-game career milestone in the last game of the home-and-away season. He believes that he will be a one-club player for his career, something that is becoming less common as spending contests betwixt clubs for top talent test loyalties.

It remains to be seen in the formidable midfielder can maintain the form that found him Power best and fairest in 2011 or earned him 21 Brownlow votes in 2014.
