The heroics of rearguard all-rounder Marcus Stoinis were not sufficient to carry his mates over the Black Caps at Eden Park, but it might be safe to assume that he will have less difficulty cracking the Aussie lineup in the future.
Prior to his recent outing, he had only made it into one ODI, but his knock on Monday night was one for the books.
For starters, he became the first Australian cricketer to hit a tone and take at least three wickets in a limited overs match.
Of the players who have managed similar feats in the past, Stoinis hit 146 runs, trailing only the 169 of Dave Callaghan that went into the books in 1994.
Stoinis also held a catch, something that, combined with his century and the three wickets, has only be done 10 times prior in the history of ODI cricket.
Only three other Aussies have managed ODI centuries from the number seven batting spot, something that only Luke Ronchi of New Zealand accomplished with 17o off 99 balls.
Stoinis’ feat came less than a month following another record setter when Matthew Wade scored a sensational century in a match win over Pakistan.
Stoinis hi 11 sixes, the second-most sixes in an innings, passing everyone, Ricky Ponting included, save for Shane Watson.
