The chances of a Queensland based horse or jockey finally cracking a Group 1 on their biggest race day are slim according to online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au.
Sportsbet has posted several novelty markets for the winter carnival highlight. Punters can get $1.70 for a Queensland based horse NOT to win any of Saturday’s three Group 1 races. The chance of a Banana Bender winning one major is $2.40 and all three, Derby, J.J. Atkins and Stradbroke, $101.
A Queensland based jockey is $2.10 to ride at least one Group 1 winner and $2.25 for zero wins. Local hoop Larry Cassidy rides $4.80 second favourite Blueberry Hill in the J.J. Atkins. In that race the colts and geldings are $1.70 favourites to win the race over the fillies ($2.10).
Southern trainers have dominated the winter carnival so it’s not surprising Chris Waller is $2.75 to train two winners on the nine race card. The Sydney trainer is $2.25 to win at least one Group 1.
“It’s been a bleak winter carnival so far for the locals but all is not lost. The Queensland trainers and jockeys have some live chances in the big races on Saturday and they might finally get a share of the carnival pie,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Christian Jantzen.
