Today or tomorrow would be ideal for a summary of the top stories in 2019, with the additional benefit of the chance to cover the entire decade, but the state of our memories is such that we do not have much recall for the previous year, much less the decade.

What we know for certain is that Winx was retired, the Richmond Tigers won the AFL Premiership, again, and the Sydney Roosters won the NRL Premiership, again.

We would be loath to be accused of fiddling while Sydney burns and we have more future focus than ability to recall everything that happened in the recent and distant past.

There is much to look forward to in 2023, so in that light, we offer a few predictions, so anyone who so desires can bring our errors into focus when the time comes.

West Coast will win the Toyota 2023 AFL Premiership over Richmond, with the score not even closely resembling the game that passed for a Grand Final in 2019. Nat Fyfe will lock up the 2023 Brownlow Medal by the time Round 20 is completed, but he will cop a suspension in the Round 21 game with St. Kilda.

Melbourne Storm will atone for their 2019 finals result and win the Telstra 2023 NRL Premiership competition. Gold Coast will hand off the spoon to the New Zealand Warriors. Latrell Mitchell will find lucrative employment in Europe.

The Maroons will win the State of Origin series and spare Kevin Walters the stain of a third consecutive loss.

There will be a new, big-money race added by racing Victoria to replace the All-Star mile. The Everest will be won by a horse other than Yes Yes Yes. Winx will deliver a foal come spring that will do better than any of Black Caviar’s when it comes time for the Winx foal to race.

We could offer more, many more predictions, but we are already wrong often enough that continuing would seem futile.
