Weak word play, but the Perth Glory currently holds a four-point lead over Melbourne Victory and five points on Sydney FC after 16 matches of the 2018 – 2019 A-League competition.
Eleven more matches remain for the A-League, but the only thing truly certain at this point is that Melbourne is not going to vanish meekly.
Western Australia is not exactly burning in Sheffield Shield play, but a couple of matches won could certainly reorder the competition and the next match for Western Australia with New South Wales would be a good place to start on closing the gap with the Blues and Victoria.
Back to the soccer, Wellington Phoenix player Roy Krishna is the leader in the Alex Tobin Medal standings, but Perth’s Neil Kilkenny’s star performance in the recent win over Newcastle Jets is closing the gap, as if Ola Toivonen for Melbourne.
Kilkenny and Toivonen came away from their most recent matches with the three vote hauls, while Krishna received no votes in the recent game with Melbourne in Round 16.
Krishan’s lead has shrunk to three, 18 to Kilkenny’s 15, while Toivonen is lurking at 14 votes.
Perth is a deserving city, especially when it has to contend with the big cities of the east.
The bookies seem to have warm feelings for WA in Sheffield Shield, placing them on the second line behind Victoria. They also have the Glory hot on the heels of Melbourne in A-League futures betting.
The Eagles are ranked third in the futures markets for the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership competition.
Now, all that remains to be done is for Ascot to come up with a big Thoroughbred race and the ascendancy of Western Australia will be complete.
