The ever-shifting drama that is part and parcel of the Floyd Mayweather – Conor McGregor fight that, close to a year following the idea, is still not concluded, developed a new wrinkle recently when Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum offered up his champion as a participant.
Should Pacquiao beat Jeff Horn in Brisbane on July 2, a big if should you choose to tune in to Horn’s camp, Pacquiao would be willing to assume the role of Mayweather surrogate.
Pacquiao has a big gap in his schedule following his meeting with Horn at Suncorp Stadium, and nothing fills big gaps better than a multimillion-dollar payday for what to some seems like a sham of major proportions.
McGregor is looking for someone to fight, anyone it would seem. He is also willing to engage in a spirited debate for the proper financial incentive.
UFC boss Dana White has signed off on his end of the potential McGregor – Mayweather bout. That announcement was made on May 18, but there has been nothing but silence from the Mayweather camp, in the respect that Mayweather’s handler, Al Haymon, seems in no all-fired hurry to accommodate McGregor.
There is a proposed date, September 16, and a proposed location, Las Vegas, but the Mayweather forecast is cloudy.
Mayweather is obviously waiting on precipitation, a lot of it, in the form of raining dollars, but the arrival of Pacquiao on the scene may make him consider moving forward lest he risk what could be the most lucrative two hours of his life.
Most observers with any level of credentials claim that in the boxing ring, McGregor would have no chance against Mayweather and that would have to be only slightly less true for a fight with Pacquiao.
Then again, it was experts who confidently predicted that the U.S. would elect its first woman president in November of 2016, and we all know how that story panned out.
