This week’s stop of the PGA Tour, the St. Jude FedEx Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, features two Australian golfers with a chance to win, or at least finish highly.
Adam Scott is five shots off the lead and will need to shoot something in the low 60s to figure in the final outcome on the par-70 layout at TPC Southwind. He will also need more than a few ahead of him to stumble.
Matt Jones, on the other hand, controls his own destiny. Just two shots off the lead, a good final round showing by Jones could be just the shot in the arm he needs to add to his resume. He needed to make 156 starts on the PGA Tour to win for the first and only time in the 2014 Shell Houston Open. That win proved his ability to stand up in the line of fire, as the Houston Open regularly attracts the top names in the world of professional golf.
Jones had done well for himself in the Majors. In 2015, at the PGA Championship, he held a two-stroke advantage at the halfway point over Jason day, although his final two rounds dropped him back to 21st.
Jones won for the first time on the PGA Tour of Australasia, winning the Emirates Australian Open, where he was able to outduel not only Adam Scott, but Jordan Spieth as well.
Two shots might be difficult to make up on a par 70 layout, but it has been done before. The leaderboard going into the final round shows him tied at 203 with Chez Reavie and Kevin Chappell. Luke List and Chad Campbell are one stroke better at 202.
The three-way tie at the top between Rafa Cabrera Bello, Stewart Cink and Ben Crane means that there are just six players between Jones and the title.
Adam Scott will need to overtake 25 for the win, but he could easily move into the top 10 with a solid final round.
