Forty-six-year-old Jim Furyk, several years past his peak golf, shot the lowest round in PGA Tour history when he managed a 58 in the fourth round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday at the TPC River Highlands course in Connecticut.
Furyk has been known to go low before, producing a 59 in 2013 that was a record shared with several other players.
After the round, as any true golfer would, Furyk noted some missed opportunities that could have made the round even lower.
The golf course was vulnerable after rain had left it in a soft condition and Furyk, not one of the longer hitters on the tour, is known for deadly accuracy on his approach shots, so on a day when the ball was staying essentially where it landed, it was as though he was tossing darts at the pub.
Furyk got things off with a chip-in eagle on the third hole, and then ran off seven consecutive birdies beginning on the sixth hole. The culmination of that string was a tap in from about a metre that had him on pace to shoot a 59 needing only to par the final six holes.
Marc Leishman had a good showing and finished in ninth position.
