How would you have liked to have a hundred at season’s beginning on the proposition of Leicester winning the English Premier League?
Had you done that, you would be staring straight into the face of a $500,000 payday.
The Leicester players did not even have to kick a ball to earn the title. It came courtesy of an unlikely late goal by Chelsea substitute Eden Hazard that produced at 2 – 2 draw with Tottenham, eliminating the last chance for the Spurs to figure in the title.
Hazard’s goal in the 83rd minute to gain the draw sent the Leicester players and supporters around the world into paroxysms of ecstasy.
Leicester was almost relegated last season when their dismal campaign produced only 11 wins, 8 draws and 19 losses. They finished 14th on the 20-team table, just four spots safe from being sent to the Football League Championship.
Even more unlikely than the title is the fact that Leicester has played only 36 games and still has two remaining in which to enjoy the fruits of their victory. They will host Everton on Saturday as England’s first new title winners since 1978 and their previous best finish was second in 1929.
