Well, it is the offseason after all, a time for a bountiful haul of stories about misbehaving AFL-ers loose on the public with plenty of time on their hands and copious quantities of cash with which to purchase all varieties of mischief, but we have decided to take a less-traveled path, the high road, and focus on the announcement that midfielder Josh Kennedy will be the new captain of the Sydney Swans in 2017.
The naming of Kennedy came as a bit of a shock, with the role of captain having been shared for the last four years by Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack.
Perhaps more important to Kennedy are the terms of his newly inked three-year contract, which is certain to be more lucrative and less ceremonial of a honour than the captaincy.
Kennedy is unquestionably deserving, of the captaincy that is, having been declared the recipient of the Bob Skilton Medal as the Swans’ best and fairest for the second consecutive year and the third time overall. He figured prominently in the Brownlow Medal voting in 2015, with only Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis and Nat Fyfe ahead.
During 2012, when the Swans took the premiership over the Hawks, Kennedy kicked two goals and on behind, along with 26 disposals, to lead the way for the Swans.
