In a masterful performance that bodes well for a return to the form at the end of last season that was nothing short of mind-boggling, Jason Day won the Arnold Palmer Invitational by leading from start to finish.
He was tied for the lead at times during the 72-hole event as the PGA Florida swing came to its conclusion, but he never trailed after any of the first three rounds.
Day was at his most impressive at the last. With the tournament on the line, he coolly drained a birdie to seize the lead on the devilishly difficult par-3 17th hole after hitting a perfect tee shot. Then, after driving poorly and out of position on the 18th, he his is approach shot out of the rough to the front greenside bunker. From there, a position from where golf commentator Johnnie Miller said that Day, or any professional golfer, would be fortunate to get within 12 feet of the hole, Day hit a highlight reel-worthy bunker shot to inside six feet, and then confidently sunk his putt for par and a prestigious victory.
Day earned $1.134 million USD for his work. Red-hot Adam Scott was eight shots in Day’s wake in a five-way tie for seventh and will have to get by for the next week on his $123,480 paycheck.
