The tongue-waggers were out in force after Marc Leishman shot himself into contention following the second round of the Honda Classic at PGA National in Florida, quick to mention that the US PGA Tour had barred him from driving a golf cart during the tournament, but those of us lacking that level of snark hope that Leishman can do well and surmount his recently self-imposed troubles.
Adam Scott also kept contact with the leaders through the second round, playing on a rain-soaked course where both the fairways and the greens gave the appearance of having being subjected to an artillery barrage.
Both Aussies moved down the leaderboard at the conclusion of the third round, however, not so much as the result of poor play, but merely from failing to match the pace established by a large group that includes multiple winners of regular and major tour stops.
Leishman put a respectable 68 on the card for his third round, yet still finds himself eight shots in arrears of the leader, Rickie Fowler, with 25 golfers ahead of him.
Scott shot 71 in the third round, leaving him 11 shots behind, so for both of the Aussies, only the round of a lifetime combined with an almost Armageddon set of circumstances affecting those ahead of them offers them anything other than a chance to move up and increase the size of the paychecks.
