Never one to fear being accused of vacillating, Jarryd Hayne is now on record having said that he should have left the NRL sooner to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL.
The reality of the entire scenario was that Hayne’s prospects of securing a roster spot on the San Francisco 49ers were roughly equivalent to the potential for someone incurring a case of frostbite in Townsville in January.
He opines that leaving sooner would have made the physical adaptation of being a top-level player in a completely unfamiliar discipline easier.
Hayne admits that it would have been challenging for him to learn the intricacies of new 49ers coach Chip Kelly’s playbook whilst claiming to have mastered that of fired coach Jim Tomsula. The cold reality here is that many talented college players with 10 years of experience and observation have been unable to decipher the nuances of one of the most complex games ever devised, and were cast aside as a result.
Not content to return to the rugby code that made him rich and famous, he is now attempting to take on the daunting challenge of playing sevens for Fiji in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
