Job security in Australia where the game of cricket is concerned is at best tenuous, as the example of Nathan Lyon confirms.
Lyon was nearly dropped several weeks ago, only to receive a reprieve and be selected as the first-choice spinner for the upcoming tour of India.
His bowl must spin like never before if he is to have any wicket-taking success in India, as he will be delivering to Virat Kohli, the batsman that is threatening to obliterate the record books from various perspectives.
Lyon has not done particularly well on previous visits to the sub-continent and he struggled during the home summer on multiple occasions, yet the Aussies are well aware that Kohli and others on the Indian squad can destroy pace at will.
The first Test will be in Pune starting next week and some nice performances by Lyon against Pakistan represent something of a resurrection, for which he has everything but Coach Darren Lehmann’s guarantee that he will be the number one spinner for the series.
Steve O’Keefe will be the other spinner and all-rounders Ashton Agar and Glenn Maxwell should be options, but at this moment, Lyon’s is the only position set in stone.
