While the season is only two rounds in, it is doubtful that any of the AFL gurus whose prognosticating skills earn them a living, comfortable or otherwise, would have envisioned a ladder with the Freemantle Dockers on the 17th rung, one above the Saint Kilda Saints.

Last season’s top of the ladder Dockers turned in second-rate performances in rounds one and two, losing convincingly to the Western Bulldogs first by the unlikely score of 103 – 38, and then by 26 points to Gold Coast.

The Dockers and their coach Ross Lyon need to right the ship quickly, because the next two weeks will see them facing West Coast and North Melbourne. The first game will be on the ground shared by Fremantle and West Coast, and the game with North Melbourne will be on the Demons’ home ground. Zac Dawson not only turned in a desultory four-disposal effort, he made a hero of Tom Lynch, permitting him to boot five goals.

On the sunny side of the street, the Adelaide Crows can express optimism following the way they dominated the other team from the city in winning by 58 points over the Power.
