The shock scratching of short-priced Sportingbet Cox Plate favourite Atlantic Jewel has thrown the betting market into disaray with It’s a Dundeel the new favourite at $4.
“Atlantic Jewel held more than half of all pre-post Cox Plate bets and was a long-time short priced favourite,” Sportingbet’s Michael Felgate said.
While Atlantic Jewel was a popular favourite, the punters had begun to drop off her in recent days with her price easing from $2.20 out to $2.80.
“It is very unusual for a champion like Atlantic Jewel to go so cold in the betting, we were stuggling to take a bet on her over the last few days with It’s A Dundeel very well backed to beat her,” Felgate said.
It’s a Dundeel now heads the Sportingbet Cox Plate market at $4, ahead of Puissance De Lune and Fiorente who has eased from $4.2 out to $4.4 after drawing the outside barrier.
Three year-olds Long John, $15 before Atlantic Jewel’s scratching is now $9 and Shamus Award $100 into $31 have been well backed since the new market came out.
“With no Atlantic Jewel the punters are honing in on It’s A Dundeel and the three-year olds, Long John has already firmed and Shamus Award has been specked each-way at big odds.”
