Borrowing, somewhat, a literal metaphor employed by Denver Broncos cornerback Aqiq Talib, who apparently shot himself in the foot, leg actually, during a drunken offseason spree, the Brisbane Bullets figuratively shot themselves in the foot recently in a sloppy 78 – 70 NBL loss to Melbourne United.
After a first quarter that saw the Bullets shoot out to a four-point lead, they were outscored nearly three to one in the second quarter and they could never recover.
It was a 15-point advantage United carried into the locker room at halftime courtesy of 11 Bullets turnovers.
Brisbane came back gamely in the third quarter of the game, and reduced Melbourne’s margin by four points as their defense clamped down on United, getting to within five points in the fourth quarter.
Brisbane seemed to have Melbourne shaky ground during the final period until David Anderson, he of four National Olympic teams, exerted his presence and steadied United.
Former United star Daniel Kickert scored 23 for the Bullets, but the only other Bullets player to contribute much by way of points was Cam Bairstow, who had 15 to go along with his nine rebounds.
United got balanced scoring from Anderson and Ramone Moore, both of whom scored 15 for United, with Anderson’s coming at a key juncture.
