Show him the money would seem to be the statement made by Brett Coletta as he has called time on a stellar but uncompensated amateur golf career in order to make his play for professional golf stardom.
He is making his pay-per-stroke debut in the Singapore Open and the 20-year old from Melbourne will be chasing some share of the $1.4 million or so AUD up for grabs at the Sentosa Golf Club.
The tournament was suspended due to lack of sponsorship 2013-2015, but made a comeback in 2016, when it was won by South Korea’s Song Young-han, who held off none other than American Jordan Spieth for a one-stroke victory.
Adam Scott won in 2010, 2006 and 2005 and is in this week’s field seeking a fourth title, so if Coletta is to establish his credentials, he will be doing so against a field that is by no means soft.
After the Singapore Open, Coletta plans to have a go at pebble Beach in California for his US PGA Tour debut.
His win in October’s Queensland Open, where a field full of accomplished pro golfers, was the impetus he needed to launch his pro career ahead of his previous intentions, so all he needs to do is play his game and give himself time to grow accustomed to going against pro fields where every starter is a potential winner every week.
