Just when the darkness seemed darkness, the light reappeared to illuminate the prospects of Benji Marshall when the former Dragon received an offer to join the Brisbane Broncos.
The 31-year-old playmaker found himself in a self-imposed dilemma recently when he turned down a $300,000 contract with St. George Illawarra to test the waters in the belief that his value exceeded the Dragons’ offer. When the Dragons said, “Too late, we no longer want you at any price,” Marshall was adrift in uncharted waters beyond his depth with no boat and no life preserver.
Apparently, however, Marshall has recently spoken to Broncos Coach Wayne Bennet regarding the prospects of Marshall concluding his career at Red Hill.
The Broncos are only ponying up with a one-year offer and it appears that the former Kiwi international will play for the minimum wage, it which event Marshall will realise that his value is apparently not in the loft sphere of the $300,000 the Dragons were offering, but more in the neighbourhood of $80,000, assuming that Marshall is one of the top 25 players for the Broncos.
Marshall’s role on the Broncos side would appear vague, as they already have Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt in the role of star playmaker.
