Joey Mawson, an Aussie race driver, will compete in the GP3 Series as he chases his ultimate goal, a spot on the grid of the F1 circuit.

He has a ride with Arden motorsport, a team owned by one of the main men of the Red Bull Racing Team, Christian Horner.

GP3 is a nine-race series that trails around Europe on the coattails of the Formula 1 races and ends its season alongside F1 in Dubai.

The 21-year-old Mawson was quoted as saying, “I’m very excited to be joining such a highly regarded team in Arden Motorsport for the 2018 GP3 season. To be able to race on the same schedule as Formula 1 is something that I’m thoroughly looking forward to.“I can’t thank everyone that is involved with PODIUM enough, they all have a huge amount of belief in me. I’m looking forward to repaying them with success on the biggest stage in the world of motorsport.”

Mawson proved his ability in 2016, winning the German Formula 4 title and backed that with a slot on the Van Amersfoort Racing team, which was the route taken by Max Verstappen on his way onto the F1 stage with Team Red Bull.

Van Amersfoort Racing was more cracked than crack last season, however, as none of its drivers was in the top 10 for season points.

“Last year was very much a learning year for me. It was a tough one having come off winning the German F4 Championship and then making the big step into F3,” said Mawson.“I’m very grateful for the experience of last year and thankful to everyone who helped me. Now I’m focused on putting everything that I learnt into practice to assist me in gaining more success in 2018.”

If Mawson does well in GP3, he could move up to Formula 2 and be within sight of his F1 goal.

For those who entertain omens, Mawson bears a passing resemble to Daniel Ricciardo.
