Australia’s neglected sport, baseball, has grabbed some attention by enlisting the services of American Marcus Green Jr., who is playing for the Adelaide Bite in the ABL after being dismissed by the Sand Diego Padres following elbow surgery.
How long Green’s stint down under lasts is subject to speculation. He seems to be recovering nicely after returning to baseball June past, and his swing seems to be free and powerful, where he is leading the league in home runs with four.
Green’s recent career path in MLB was not positive. The Texas Rangers willingly parted with him in August; two months after Green underwent surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The Rangers packed the 22-year0old catcher off to Sand Diego, and it was the Padres who floated the suggestion of playing in Australia to burnish the rust of 12 months of inactivity.
Green has helped the Bite to rise to third on the ABL ladder, although they are displaying some schizophrenic inconsistency to this point of the season. Mitch Dening has been, along with Green, a bright spot in the picture.
The Bite’s roster has landed nine players on the squad for the ABL All-Star game in Melbourne next week.
