The past several days have not been kind to carriers of Brisbane civic pride, so far as that pride has anything to do with the results of sporting contests.
After being treated as unwelcome relatives squatting down for an extended visit by uncivil hosts Newcastle in A-League action, the Brisbane Roar mewed all the way home in time to see the invading Adelaide 36ers snatch a 96 - 93 overtime victory from the Brisbane Bullets in NBL action.
The outcome had to leave an even more bitter taste in the mouths of the Bullets players and coaches, as they had a comfortable 11-point lead at one point early in the fourth quarter.
The 36ers rode the shoulders of a hot Jerome Randle, who contributed 34-points to the Adelaide side’s total 96. The loss provided a rapid demise to the Bullets’ perfect season, denying them their third victory to inaugurate the 2016 – 2017 NBL season.
The 36ers leveled the game with just under 30 seconds remaining and had two shots to win it in the final seconds that clanked and sent the game into extra-time.
Enter Torrey Craig to try and rescue the Bullets by scoring all 10 of the Bullets’ overtime points, only to succumb to Randle’s masterful direction of the 36ers.
