Just ahead of the final round of the 2017 Masters in Augusta, Georgia, Adam Scott is lurking near the top of the leaderboard with only six players and three shots separating him from the top.

If he is anything like the us hackers, he is no doubt engaging in the old “what if” game when he looks back on his opening round 75 that cost him dearly. Had that first round only been adequate, say par, he would be tied for the lead going into the final round and well positioned to secure his second emblematic green jacket, along with being very well funded should he seek to add some matching trousers to his wardrobe.

He went our early for the second round on Friday and shot a quiet, competent 69 in blustery conditions, and then backed that again yesterday to leave him at 213, three shots behind Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia.

Scott will have just three pairings behind him when he tees off for the final round.

Jason Day made the cut on the number and also had a 69 in the third round, but for all intents, he shot himself out of contention with a 74 on Thursday and a 76 on Friday.

Marc Leishman was dismissed after the second round.

Aussie U.S. Amateur champ Curtis Luck survived to play the weekend. He trails the only other amateur to make the cut, Stewart Hagestad, by four strokes.
