The storyline on the 2016 Masters got a bit more interesting in the third round when Jordan Spieth threw away three of his four stroke lead in the final two holes.
His mini-collapse brought many players back into the tournament going into the final round. Jason Day is now within three shots and will tee off in the third group.
Spieth’s issues did not help Adam Scott. He is 10 shots behind at 223, eight over par, so his chances are nil. Cameron Smith is even further back at 229 after three rounds. He ballooned to a 10-over 82 in the third round after being at least respectable for the first two rounds. Marc Leishman failed to make the cut.
One of the other interesting storylines is 59-year-old Bernhard Langer just two shots off Spieth’s lead. If he were to win somehow, he would be the oldest man to win a Major by almost 10 years and he is 13 years older than Jack Nicklaus was in 1986 when he won the Masters at the age of 46. The other part to that story is that at Augusta National, Langer is permitted to use the anchored putting stroke that the PGA banned with the beginning of 2016.
Brandon DeChambeau is another interesting angle. The young amateur has taken a radical approach to golf club design with all the clubs in his bag being of equal shaft length. He was near the top of the field until several costly errors towards the end of the third round derailed his effort.
